Best Type of Kernel for Your Homemade Gourmet Popcorn
The foundation of gourmet popcorn lies in the choice of kernel. Various types, growing methods, and sizes all play a crucial role in determining the taste and texture of the final product. Many of our local farmers markets carry local kernels.
Kernel Varieties
The popcorn world is dominated by two main kernel types – butterfly and mushroom. Butterfly kernels burst into irregular shapes with plenty of “wings,” perfect for catching butter and seasonings, making them ideal for savory popcorn. Mushroom kernels, meanwhile, pop into a robust, ball-like shape, making them suited for holding heavier coatings like caramel or chocolate, typically used in gourmet popcorn gifts.
Organic vs Non-Organic
Organic popcorn kernels, grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, might offer a cleaner taste. Non-organic kernels are more readily available and usually less costly, but may carry residues from conventional farming methods. The choice between organic and non-organic kernels ultimately aligns with personal health standards and preferences.
The Impact of Kernel Size
Kernel size influences not just the volume of popped popcorn but also its texture. Smaller kernels generally yield a tenderer popcorn, perfect for microwave gourmet varieties or popping at home. Larger kernels produce bigger, fluffier pieces, better suited for bold flavors and mixes. Optimal gourmet popcorn kernels are uniform in size and density for even popping and flavor distribution.
How to Make Great Popcorn At Home
The perfect popcorn texture and flavor start with the right popping technique – but it doesn’t end there. Whether you’re choosing a Stovetop Method for a hands-on approach, Air Popping for health-conscious individuals, or Microwave Popping for convenience seekers you can uplevel your at home popcorn game by paying attention to these four stages.
- Kernels matter
- If you have an old bag of kernels in the back of your pantry this is not the way to start! Fresh kernels from the farmers market or local grower are your best bet.
- Proper equipment
- Whether you are air popping or using the stovetop make sure you have the proper equipment. This doesn’t have to be expensive but a heavy bottomed pan or wok and an air popper that heats to the proper temperature will make a world of difference.
- Toppings
- This is where our premium oils and your imagination come to play. Whether it’s our Mushroom Sage Olive Oil or Truffle Oil you’ll experience a burst of flavor that brings you beyond the basic salt and butter variation you enjoy at the theatre.
- Serving Style
- A fun popcorn bowl adds an air of play to your movie night experience. We love these on Etsy.
Stovetop Method
The secret to traditional stovetop popcorn involves heating oil in a pot before adding popcorn kernels. Our Primo Oils can enhance this experience, ensuring a flavorful snack. The best popcorn is made with a heavy bottomed 8 to 12 quart pot with a secure lid. But we’ve also had a lot of success with a wok that has a secure lid.
Begin with two tablespoons of oil for each half cup of kernels, heating the oil over medium heat before adding the popcorn.
- Heat 2 tbsp of olive oil over medium heat.
- Add 1/2 cup of popcorn kernels.
- Shake the pot gently as the kernels pop.
Homemade Popcorn Stovetop Method for Electric Stove
If you have an electric stove and want to make the best homemade popcorn set your electric stove to a 6 or 7 heat level. Add your kernels all at once and shake so they are level on the bottom of the pan. Once you hear your kernels start popping shake the pan until the kernels slow down. Turn off the heat and remove your pan from the heat while the kernels finish popping.
Homemade Popcorn Stovetop Method for Gas Stove
Cooking homemade popcorn on a gas stove is a slightly different method. Add your oil and then add 2 to 3 kernels to the pan. Cover your pan. When the kernels start popping, remove the lid and add the rest of your kernels. Recover with your lid and shake until you hear the kernels slow down, about 10 seconds between each pop. Remove from the heat and allow to finish popping before you remove the pan lid.
Air Popping
For those seeking a healthier option, Air Popping requires no additional oils, preserving the natural taste of the popcorn. It’s a straightforward process: add kernels to the air popper and wait for them to pop.
- No oils needed – just popcorn kernels.
- Use an air popper machine.
- Pop until the popping sound slows down.
There’s no oil used in the cooking process of air popped popcorn but you can add your Primo Oils after the popcorn is finished popping. I like to stand over my air popper and alternate olive oil and butter until it’s finished. I then toss the popcorn with a spatula, scraping up the salt and oil that has settled on the sides of the bowl as I go.
Microwave Popping
Microwave Popping is the epitome of convenience. You can purchase gourmet popcorn microwave bags or use a microwave-safe bowl with a vented lid like this one, adding kernels and a dash of oil for taste.
- Utilize either gourmet popcorn microwave bags or a microwave-safe bowl.
- Add 1/4 cup of popcorn kernels with a teaspoon of oil.
- Microwave for about 2-3 minutes or until the popping slows down.
How to Make Flavored Popcorn at Home
Infusing popcorn with flavor is a delicate balance of selecting quality oils and blending herbs and spices. Start with high-quality olive oil or an oil with a high smoke point and gently warm to infuse with chosen flavors.
Best Oil for Homemade Gourmet Popcorn
Olive oil comes in a variety of flavors and quality. For the best homemade popcorn experience you’ll want to use high quality olive oils that are infused with flavor – not ones that have been artificially flavored with syrups. At Primo Oils we import only the finest olive oils. You can explore our infused olive oils here.
Seasonings and Toppings
